Tristan Hope

Born of a melodic background in piano, clarinet, bass clarinet and soprano saxophone, Tristan’s musical enthusiasm has evolved into one with its feet now firmly planted in the land of rhythm. Having begun his formal training at Wesley College, the VCA and Box Hill institute, Tristan has studied with some of the top players in the country such as Darren Perkins, Tony Floyd, Graham Morgan and John Corniola. Tristan has been a key member of bands stretching right across the stylistic range. Everything from intimate Jazz and Latin (The J spots), to funk and reggae (Funk the Distance), through to modern original rock (The Pyramid Scheme). With further involvement in tribute franchises and theatre productions (The Buddy Holly Show) and (Dandenong theatre co), Hip hop (Word of Mouth) and sessional work for artists such as Simon Phillips and Adam King. Tristan also had the pleasure of taking the rhythmic reins of Triple J unearthed winning band 2003, Fizard, in their later stages of life. Since early 2011 Tristan has had the pleasure of working with Khristian Mizzi, with whom he is preparing to launch an album this summer.

Huw Elias

Huw’s love of music began at the age of seven, when he started playing piano. But it didn’t take him long to discover the drums – a passion that’s stuck with him for over 20 years. In high school, Huw joined a successful Ska band that played esteemed Melbourne venues and festivals and toured interstate. He was extremely fortunate to achieve success at such a young age, and it was during this time that Huw cemented his love of drums and performance. An avid traveler, Huw spent much of his twenties living in Europe, playing shows and recording with bands from Switzerland, France and Sweden. He was able to extend his musical knowledge within different cultural contexts as well as strengthening his skills as a performer. Upon returning to Australia, Huw completed a degree in music, which gave him the knowledge and skills to understand music through a broader context. During this time, Huw continued session drumming for a number of Melbourne bands. Shortly after completing his degree in music, Huw undertook a diploma of education and worked in the music department at a NSW high school, where he taught the high music syllabus to year 12. Huw can prepare students for exams and school-based performances. Throughout his drumming life, Huw has had some great teachers himself, including Red Drum’s own, Darren Perkins and the late Allan Browne. Allan taught Huw about history of and cultural heritage of the drumset and demonstrated the importance of being an artist. Darren has given Huw the technique and creative facility which has allowed him continue to flourish both as a contemporary performer and educator. These are lessons Huw is excited about passing onto future students. While Huw’s drumming style is founded on strong fundamentals and rigorous adherence to correct technique, his teaching style is adaptable to bring out the best in each student. Huw is a proud member of the Red Drum team.
